The Windsor’s Story
Located in Johnson City, Tennessee, between the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains, The Windsor Speakeasy is a local staple for good company and great cocktails.
In 1920, the manufacturing and distribution of alcohol was made illegal in the United States, thus ushering in a 13-year era popularly known as “Prohibition.” During this era, the rise of illegal alcohol creation and consumption made way for small, hidden bars called “speakeasies.” Speakeasies would often be located in nondescript buildings behind hidden doors, where customers would have to know a specific password to gain entry. Behind these doors, debauchery reigned supreme, the drinks flowed, and bartenders got creative with the limited materials available to them.
Designed to mimic a Prohibition-era speakeasy, The Windsor Speakeasy is named after the Windsor Hotel, once located in downtown Johnson City and the hideout of the famed gangster Al Capone. Though we don’t require a password, we will lead you through a hidden door and just like an old-fashioned speakeasy, we’ll show you just how creative we’ve gotten with our cocktails (but we have a much greater wealth and variety of materials than were available in the ‘20s and ‘30s).
Located at 220 W. Market Street, The Windsor Speakeasy is a gem of a craft cocktail bar, and we look forward to meeting you and letting the good times roll.
